Poker Game Variations
Poker is a game that has several variations, all variations make use of the basic rules such as the hand rankings, and proceeds of play i.e. Pre-flop, Flop, Turn, River and showdown. Poker games come in categories as follows:
Community Poker Games
Poker variations making use of community cards. Community cards also known as shared cards or board cards are cards that are placed face-up on the table shared by players. Poker games that make use of community cards include Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hold’em. Texas Hold’em and Omaha are almost similar. The only difference being that Texas Hold’em makes use of two hole cards whilst Omaha uses four hole cards. In Texas Hold’em, players would have to construct their winning hand from their two hole cards and the community cards whilst Omaha, players would have to construct their winning hand from any two of their four hole cards and only three community cards.
Draw Poker Games
These games allow players to draw their cards and get replacements. Draw poker is very popular and it has become to be a very easy poker game to learn and master. The draw poker games include 5-card draw, Triple draw and many others. Draw poker games make use of a dealer button. Two Players would have to make mandatory bets known as blinds. The first player left to the dealer button makes a small blind - which is half the amount of the early bets required by a table and the next player left to the player with the small blind would have to make a big blind - which is the full amount of the early bets required by the table. The dealer button will rotate in a clockwise direction so that each player gets this advantage. The dealer button and blinds are also used in the community card games.
Stud Poker Games
These are games whereby players are dealt with some cards face-up and other cards facedown. All players in the game would have to make an ante - mandatory bets to be placed by each player before the game commences. The game kicks off with a player who has the lowest card rank showing. As the game proceeds, players will be dealt with more cards face-up or face down depending on which stud poker variation they are playing. The stud variations include 7-card stud, 6-card stud and 5-card stud.
