The Worst Starting Hands in Video Poker

While learning to play Video Poker online, it is important to learn strategy, timing and big hands. It is equally important to know when you have a bad starting hand, and what you should be doing to correct the situation – or put yourself in the best possible situation to succeed.

You already know that in a game like Jacks or Better video poker, you need to have some premium hands to really cash in. When you are dealt a poor hand, you need to decide what cards have value, and what should be traded in for something better.

When you are given a video poker hand that has no pairs or connected cards, you then look to suits for value. A hand like 4d-8d-6d-3h-10s initially looks terrible (and it is), but you still have a chance to hit for a bigger payout.

While it is not incredibly likely, you can still look for the flush and large cash that will come from a hand like that. Therefore, you should hold the 4, 8 & 6 of diamonds, discard the 3 and 10, then hope for the flush to hit. Again, this is making the best of a bad situation – you are not going to be able to rely on hitting flushes from terrible hands.

Because you are not going to outright fold away this hand, when you are starting with rags, you should go for the either the highest ceiling or the highest probability of success. This means taking a bit of a gamble, but sometimes that is what you need to do in video poker.

You probably won’t get rich from poor starting hands, but when played with a direct strategy, you can cash in from unfavorable beginnings. Watch out for big hand possibilities when given rags to start.
